EV Charger Installation in Montreal, Brossard, Longueuil, Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Chambly and the South Shore
Buying an electric vehicle? You need a charger. Even better if you install it before purchasing the vehicle.
To fully benefit from your EV, a proper and safe charging station installation is essential.
In this article, I explain the costs, options (15A to 80A), risks, and installation realities — whether in a house or a condo.
Types of charging (15A to 80A)
15 amps (1.4 kW – 120V standard outlet)
Very slow charging (3 to 5 km per hour)
Uses an existing outlet
Temporary solution only
32 amps (7.7 kW – 240V)
Charges about 25–30 km per hour
Good for occasional driving
40 amps (9.6 kW – 240V)
Most in demand, can be installed with an EV outlet
Fast charging suitable for most drivers
48 amps (11.5 kW – 240V)
Fast charging, but requires proper installation
80 amps (19.2 kW – 240V)
Option
for trucks like the Ford F-150 Lightning with very large batteries
The higher the amperage, the faster the charging — but the more demanding the installation.
50A outlet vs EV charger: the key difference
50A outlet (NEMA 14-50)
Often installed with non-industrial grade outlets
Risk of overheating or melting with frequent use
Less safe long term
Hardwired EV charger
Direct connection (no outlet)
Safer and more durable
Better load management
A hardwired installation is recommended over a plug for safety.
Unsafe installations seen in the field
Residential-grade 50A outlets (not heavy-duty)
Loose connections
Improper wiring
These can create a risk of overheating and fire.
Electrical capacity: is your panel sufficient?
It depends on your electrical service:
100 amp service
Often insufficient for a 40–60A charger
Options:
Install a load management system
Upgrade to 200 amps
200 amp service
Generally sufficient
Depends on existing loads (heating, spa, etc.)
A load calculation by a certified electrician is required for safety and code compliance.
Condo / multi-unit installation
More complex than a house:
Requires condo board approval
Sometimes installed from the electrical room
Conduit runs through the parking garage
Load management often required
Typical cost:
$2,000 to $6,000+
May be higher depending on distance and complexity
EV charger rebate in Quebec
In Quebec, financial assistance is available through the Roulez vert program offered by the Government of Quebec.
Up to $600 for the purchase and installation of a residential EV charger.
This usually covers a large portion of the charger cost.
Main eligibility criteria:
Own or lease an eligible electric vehicle
Install the charger at your primary residence
Have the installation done by a certified electrician
Provide invoices and proof of purchase
The Roulez vert program:
Has been temporarily suspended in the past
Was later reintroduced with changes
Can be modified or removed at any time depending on government budgets
It is recommended to take advantage of the rebate while it is available.
Smart chargers: control from your phone
Many models offer:
Remote control via app
Charging schedule programming
Usage statistics
Power management
Popular models:
FLO
ChargePoint
Wallbox
Tesla (Wall Connector)
Ideal for optimizing energy consumption and taking advantage of Hydro-Québec rates.
New home
New homes built under the 2016 electrical code must include wiring for an EV charger. It will be located either outside or in the garage.
Installing an EV charger is easier in a new home because the wiring is often already run to the panel.
In older homes, a new cable must be run from the electrical panel to the charger location.
Typical installation costs for EV charger (excluding charger)
EV Charger Installation in a new home
$300 to $1,000
Less work required in homes built after 2016
EV Charger Installation in an older home
$500 to $1,500
Additional work may be required if the electrical service is too small
More labor is needed to run wiring
EV Charger Complex installation
$1,500 to $5,000
Underground runs, detached garage, long conduit runs, finished ceilings, pedestal installations, etc.
EV Charger Condo installation
$2,000 to $6,000
Installation in underground parking with load management from the electrical room
